Compulsive Overeating

Understanding Compulsive Overeating

Compulsive Overeating, or Binge Eating Disorder (BED), is characterized by recurrent episodes of consuming large amounts of food with a sense of loss of control. Unlike Bulimia Nervosa, these episodes are not followed by purging or other compensatory behaviors.

Key Features and Impact

Binge episodes often involve rapid eating, eating past fullness, eating alone due to embarrassment, and feelings of shame or guilt afterward. BED affects emotional well-being and is linked to serious health risks, including Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease. People of all ages, genders, and body sizes can be affected, often alongside anxiety, depression, or trauma.

Treatment and Recovery

Treatment focuses on breaking the binge cycle and addressing emotional triggers. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) build coping and emotional regulation skills. Nutritional counseling restores healthy eating patterns, and medications may be used for co-occurring mental health issues. With specialized care, long-term recovery is achievable.
