Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a vital step-down level of care for individuals recovering from eating disorders. It offers structured therapeutic support while allowing patients to live at home, attend work or school, and practice recovery skills in daily life. IOP is designed for those who are medically stable and no longer require the higher structure of Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) or residential treatment, but still need consistent support to prevent relapse and strengthen recovery.

Who IOP is For

IOP is appropriate for patients who are stable enough to function independently for most of the day, stepping down from a higher level of care, or struggling with eating disorder behaviors while able to maintain abstinence between sessions. Participants benefit from regular accountability and therapeutic intervention several times a week to address emotional and psychological challenges.

Structure and Schedule

The program typically runs 3 to 5 days per week, with sessions lasting 3 to 4 hours, often scheduled in the late afternoon or evening. Supervised meals or snacks are provided to support adherence to meal plans and address food-related anxiety in real-world contexts. Group therapy forms the core of IOP, focusing on relapse prevention, emotional regulation using DBT skills, cognitive restructuring via CBT, and body image work. Patients also continue individual therapy, nutritional counseling, and, when appropriate, family therapy to reinforce progress.

Goals of IOP

The primary goal of IOP is to promote sustainable, independent recovery. The program helps patients apply skills learned in intensive treatment to everyday life, maintain consistent, healthy eating behaviors, and strengthen support networks to prevent isolation. Successful completion typically transitions patients to standard outpatient care, where they continue recovery with the guidance of therapists and dietitians.
